Nicole Richie & Joel Madden Want You to Text for Charity
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are trying inventive new ways to get their young and tech-savvy fans involved in efforts to do good. Their latest venture is a text-messaging campaign. The duo is partnering with MySpace to raise funds for their children’s charity, the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.
“We hope our support will shine a spotlight on important issues facing children and will inspire and educate the public, especially young people, to get involved, too. We want to do more than write checks,” Nicole and Joel write on their website.
The “Text CHILD to 90999″ campaign’s primary goal is to build a playground in a housing project in LA.
“We think there should be a playground on the concrete slab you’re sitting on,” Joel said at a recent event.. “It’s bigger than building a playground, but this is an exciting start. And I’ll come play on it.”
I think this is a fun and neat way to raise money for charity. I wish Nicole, Joel and their charity the best in this endeavor.

okay, now this is just a little too gag-me! What an obvious play for goody-two-shoes points with the media! last year, they hit up their friends for this and even shamelessly gave away baby shower gifts meant for them to this charity (hello, tax write off for something they didn’t even pay for!) and now this gratuitous grand-standing!
geez-a-loo! just build the damn thing yourself! Oh no, but wait that would give them attention needed to help rebuild nicole’s image.
how about nicole just goes back to work already?

Wow, you can’t even insult people correctly… I think it’s an amazing thing they’re doing. Which isn’t to get them further ahead, seeing as how no one really knows about it…

Seriously, I can’t believe you can say that. They’re trying to help people less fortunate than them and you say it’s all so they can write it off on their taxes. That’s pathetic that you would say something like that. All I ever see you say is nasty shit. Just stop. You obviously think they’re both horrible people so just get off the fucking site.
I agree with DCMA Queen, what they’re doing is great.

hey DCMA and Jessica,
Go FUCK yourselves! My opinions are just as valid as yours, you two little twits. And obviously more so since I ALWAYS provide a fact-based rationale, while you two are just gushing fans who think everything they do is just the greatest, most herotic thing since sliced bread.
Get over yourselves and grow up. You need to be more discerning and see the PR stratgey employed behind the actions played out for media consumption. Have you ever heard the expression, ” there is no limit to the good someone can do if they don’t care who gets the credit?” Nicole and Joel violate this rule everytime they go over the top like this and have to publicize every little bit of “charity” they do.
All they have to do (and many others to be sure) is employ the “it’s for the children” line and poof! voila! they are great humanitarians getting plenty of sappy media play. How gouche! suckers like you just lap up this schtick.
Meanwhile, homeless people and drug addicts need help too, but how many celebs go out of their way to help them? Answer, not many. why? Because it doesn’t play to the media as well, that’s why. doing things for kids is the fad du jour.
So again, grow up and use your brain. I’m not going anywhere. You can be a fan of a celeb and not be such a gulible, simp-sucker to fawn over everything they do. And being a fan also means being honest and calling them out when they do something so gratuitous as this.

I think anytime anyone helps children it’s a good thing, I don’t just freak out because it’s Joel, and I’m a ‘gushing fan’ of his.
And I don’t see how it’s going over the top when they’re helping get a playground built. It’s a fucking playground, how that’s over the top I don’t know.
Just because they decided to focus their foundation on children when they realized they would have a child of their own doesn’t mean they don’t care about homeless people and drug addicts, it just means they wanted to focus on children. Besides, the foundation has collaborated with Beyond Shelter, which tries to end homelessness. And it shouldn’t matter who they chose to help, there are a lot of children who need things and need help and the more people who help them the better.
And I’m not a gullible, ’simp’ sucker who fawns over everything they do. I’ve called Joel out for plenty of things, I’ve called Benji out for plenty of things. However, I chose to not be a ‘twit’ and insult them when they’re trying to help people. And even if they WERE doing it to make themselves look good, which you don’t know, just assume, people are still getting help.

i made it very clear that what is over the top is their publicity-seeking. and looking at your past comments on this site, if you’re indeed “calling them out” as you claim, then it certainly isn’t being done here.
and children’s charities receive the bulk of charitible gifts in the U.S. while many other worthy causes are struggling, with many going under.
while i agree that it’s certainly one’s choice to give money to any charity they wish, however, if you’re looking to do a lot of good, again there are plenty of good causes that are woefully underfunded and badly need help.
ultimately i don’t care what charity they suport, i just hate the crass, self agrandizing way they go about seeking the limelight to glorify themselves in the process. if their focus really were “the children” and not the attenion and good PR they get from it, then they wouldn’t be playing it out in front of the media as much as they do.

But thier foundation isn’t even getting that much attention… and thank you Jessica. I’m not just some “gushing fan,” because I believe that even though their charitable efforts aren’t going much further than a playground in LA. I just don’t understand why you’re so unbelievably against a charity. They’re working to better the lives of children, no matter what.
And how is a charity run by celebrities going to raise money without the media being involved? It’s just plain smart. They’re getting the word out to raise money, not to flaunt thier name.

Again, I’m agreeing with DCMA Queen, I’ve barely heard of the foundation getting any publicity, other than on Good Charlotte’s site, and DCMA’s site, except on popsugar.com and on myspace a few days ago, that’s not a lot of publicity.
And yeah, I don’t call them out here. Because usually if I’m going to get into a discussion about them doing something I do it on a Good Charlotte forum or simply messaging back and forth with other fans on myspace.
I’m sure there are many charities that need more help, but as I said, I’m sure their own child inspired them to help children. Who knows, they could do things to help other charities later on or in the process of helping children. I know Joel has done things with Good Charlotte that has helped with different things, like Live 8 for example. But that’s besides the point, they are still doing A LOT OF GOOD, with this charity.
Honestly, I don’t know what it is they’re doing that you call ‘playing it out’, I mean yeah, I’m not gonna lie, Joel saying he’d play on the playground was kinda cheesy, but other than that I don’t see them trying to play out anything or glorify themselves at all.

“either “gushing fans” or just plain willfully ignorant. how many times do i have to say it’s not the charity but the publicity-seeking and grand-standing that is the issue? seriously, even a third-grader could have gotten that point by now.
